Gary Steel and Indiana Harbor

Indiana continues to lead the nation in steel production. In the 20th century, Gary was home to the largest steel mill in the world. It's massive complex, skeletal remains, hulking structures, tunnels, and blast furnaces comprise an industrial abyss that is a dominant and enormous feature of the northwest corner of Indiana, and remains the largest mill in North America. Indiana Harbor is the largest integrated steelmaking facility in North America.

Steel production is one of the most energy intensive sectors of the economy, accounting for roughly 6% of the energy consumed in manufacturing.
